1. My work, WHY?   (Artist Statment)
*  I was born in Pasadena, California, into a fortunate collision of Catholicism, Santería, and Voodoo. Ritual, nature, folklore, saints, spirits, death, beauty, fear, and community were all part of the same world. As a kid, I went to Catholic mass where the prayers were in Latin and the sermons were in Spanish, neither of which I understood. The beautiful thing about not comprehending either language is that nobody ever told me I was going to Hell. I avoided the Catholic trauma, sat there happily, and watched. I studied the paintings, statues, gestures, smoke, and architecture, dissecting the compositions and inventing my own stories about what I was seeing.
*  In Hollywood in the 1980s, punk gave that instinct a direction. I became obsessed with power, injustice, and the machinery people build to control one another. I protested, got arrested, and was beaten by the LAPD, breaking bones more than once. It never made me want to look away. It made me want to look harder, to understand what lives beneath power, fear, belief, violence, and the stories we tell ourselves about one another.
*  Being the son of an engineer, and grandson of the inventor of the jet engine, I eventually led me to becoming a machinist. During my apprenticeship I was taught that when making a tool it should be half the person who makes it and half the work it was built to perform. It should become an extension of the makers body. That idea connected deeply with me and eventually found its way into an unexpected photography career.
*    I build cameras and other instruments by hand as a fear shedding offering between two unknown personal histories. The tool becomes the common space between myself and the person, place, or story in front of it. The camera becomes collaborator, witness, and sometimes accomplice. I use it to play in the shadows, and move toward the places where fear, compassion, violence, belief, memory, identity, and desire hide.
*  The shadow is not something we should fearfully avoid. It is a necessary piece of the puzzle if we are ever going to become whole. There is a beautiful kind of light in knowing our darkness, recognizing the parts of ourselves we would rather hide, and then seeing those same parts in someone else. Perhaps that is where empathy begins.
*  My work is ultimately about the beauty of being human, even when that beauty is buried beneath everything we do to one another. I want to get close to the difficult places, not to glorify the darkness, but to understand it well enough to find the human being still living inside it.
*  The machines are ultimately a means of tearing down walls, a vulnerable communal bridge built to connect with and share space with what prefers to remain hidden, yet dreams to be seen.
I build them because I believe the dance of shadow and light carries a universal truth.

And I want to live in it.

2A. Documentary on my Beauty of Decay Project

The Beauty of Decay

A short documentary about my long term project The Beauty of Decay, a project concerned with the shifting boundaries between beauty and repulsion, permanence and impermanence, life and what remains after it.

For the project, I built a 4 × 5 film camera from a 150-year-old human skull, an object already transformed by time from living being to artifact. The skull became both instrument and subject: a machine made from mortality, built to look outward while quietly carrying the evidence of what lies beneath us all, and the future of natural, beautiful decay.

4. The Us & Them Project

I built the Us & Them camera to confront one of humanity’s oldest and most dangerous inventions, the belief that there is an “us” and a “them.” Those in power have always understood the usefulness of this division. Give fear a name, give it a face, and the distance between human beings becomes permission to dominate, dehumanize, and destroy.

I have carried the camera into refugee camps on Lesbos, Palestinian communities in the West Bank, Standing Rock, and Zapatista territories in Chiapas. I did not go looking for “them.” I went looking for the place where the boundary between us begins to disappear.

The camera is an instrument, a witness, and a mirror. It asks what we are capable of becoming when another human being is made foreign enough to fear, hate, or erase. The danger may not be the existence of “them,” but our willingness to believe they exist at all.

6. Untouchable (HIV+ Blood Camera Project)

The Untouchable Project began with a conversation with one of my closest friends about his life before and after being diagnosed HIV-positive. It opened my eyes to the distance between how I saw the world and how he experienced it, shaped by the stigma, fear, and isolation surrounding HIV. I built the Untouchable camera as a collaborative offering, a way to bridge that distance and challenge how we see people living with HIV.

The camera uses HIV-positive blood as a red filter, physically placing the very thing society fears between the subject and the photograph. Hand-built from aircraft-grade aluminum, titanium, and copper, the camera transforms the blood into the medium through which each portrait is made.

Photographing men, women, children, and grandparents living with HIV, the project is ultimately about people, not a diagnosis. Each portrait asks us to look beyond the label, confront our own fears and prejudices, and recognize the humanity we share. The Untouchable Project is an attempt to make visible the people society too often chooses not to see.

"If a man has wealth, he has to make a choice, because there is the money heaping up. He can keep it together in a bunch, and then leave it for others to administer after he is dead. Or he can get it into action and have fun, while he is still alive. I prefer getting it into action and adapting it to human needs, and making the plan work." George Eastman.
Early industry leaders knew the health of the companies they created relied on health and happiness of their employees. George Eastman, the founder of Eastman Kodak, started some of the first social programs in the U.S. Employees at Kodak received medical, dental, hearing and vision benefits along with access to schools and the arts. It was common for employees at Kodak to spend their lifetime, proudly working at Kodak.
Industry leaders today go from company to company to follow the greatest financial compensation, and employees are expendable pawns.
The "Modern Industry" Project focuses on the shifts of industry motivational standards over the last hundred years.
The "Modern Industry" camera is a 8"x10" film camera with artifacts in the camera that relate to the subjects of corporate health and corporate greed.
"Modern Industry" installation is currently on exhibit at ArtisanWorks in Rochester NY.

"I know the cactus and have met the toad.

Their prisms of salt and helium and heat and pain keep the pace of time.

They told me we would play in pockets and ponds and blood and milk.

They know. I trust them.

Their beauty tastes of needles and venom.

The virtues of Saints."  -WmB-

Wayne Martin Belger. Another beautiful day in the Middle East

* Bio

Wayne Martin Belger (b. 1964, Los Angeles) is a fine art photographer and machinist whose work examines the machinery of human nature. With a background in linguistics and comparative religion, Belger has spent more than three decades exploring how belief, power, identity, memory, and human connection are constructed, communicated, and carried through culture.

Since 1998, Belger has conceived and hand-fabricated more than eighteen subject-specific cameras, each built from blocks of metal and designed for a particular body of work. The cameras function as both photographic instruments and extensions of the artist, forming a physical and psychological bridge between maker, subject, and place. His resulting photographs and installations bring together the handmade camera, large-scale analog prints, and artifacts gathered from the communities and environments in which the work was made.

His projects have taken him across the United States and internationally, engaging subjects ranging from religion and corporate greed to HIV, migration, Indigenous sovereignty, and American gun culture. His work has been exhibited internationally and is held in permanent museum collections and private collections worldwide.

Belger lives and works in a converted 1940s diaper-washing factory in Tucson, Arizona, where the machines and the photos they create are still made by hand.
